One Outfit to Rule Them All: My Response To The Style Blogger

04/18/2011

Last week The Style Blogger Dan Trepanier posted on his blog that he thought the one outfit he could wear every day for the rest of his life would be the suit with sneakers because it was so versatile. I thought about this a while back, but came to a different conclusion, so let me chime in. For me, the ultimate go-anywhere be-anything outfit is a fitted navy blazer with a dress shirt and nice pair of chinos. Here's why:

My 10 essentials #6: Levi's 514 Jeans

Every guy shoud own at least one pair of basic dark denim, something without any adornments, just simple, clean denim. For mine, I turn to the Levi's 514s. They're slim enough to have a clean silhouette, but not so slim that it looks like I'm smuggling plums. There's something to be said for a pair of pants that only looks better the less you wash them and can be dressed up with a navy blazer, or down with a clean white v-neck. I know I can wear my 514s virtually anywhere, and that's why they're one of my ten essentials.

It's been quite a while since I made a style essentials post because I misplaced my camera cable, but I'm glad to be back on track now. My fifth style essential is my deep navy blue Paul Smith Pocket Square.

My 10 Style Essentials #4: Brooks Brothers Bow-Ties

Until I worked for Brooks Brothers, I didn't think that bow-ties were cool.

I thought they were interesting, I thought they were a sometimes-alternative, but I certainly didn't think they were cool. That changed when I came to Brooks and I was told that we were all going to be wearing them for the grand opening of our new store. I owned a couple of slim Dolce and Gabbana batwing bow-ties, but I wanted something new. I flipped through the racks of hanging bow-ties, until spotting their slim pointed-end bow-ties, only a few that had probably been brought in to test the market.

I picked out two, and I've been hooked ever since. A well-trained gentleman can make a good bow-tie work in almost any situation, have he only the right the right tie for the job, and that's why they're one of my style essentials.

My 10 Essentials #3: Burberry Peacoat

Here in Alberta, winter weather ranges anywhere from October to April, and a good casual winter jacket is a must. Most people just use a ski jacket, but I find that they're not ideal for most outings. That's why a few years back I added my Burberry peacoat to my collection, which then consisted only of topcoats and ski jackets.

Burberry is famous for their peacoats, and with good reason. It's all about the details. Lined pockets, taped seams, reinforced buttons,  and an exaggerated collar that guards my ears from the wind when it's up, among other things. I now wear this jacket almost everywhere for the better half of a year, and for that reason it's definitely one of my 10 essentials.

My 10 Style Essentials #2: Vintage Travel Bag

Vintage shopping can be hit-or-miss, but occasionally you find pieces that make it worth it.

After my Banana Republic travel bag was stolen at a fast food joint, I needed something to replace it with, so I went out to the vintage stores and checked out the stock. Ultimately I posted photos of my two favourite bags on my Tumblr and let my followers decide. You guys didn't let me down, picking the bag I now take with me everywhere. Just big enough to hold my laptop and my books, but small enough that I don't mind carrying it all the time. Thanks!

My 10 Essentials #1: My John Varvatos Navy Blazer

I lucked out when I bought this on sale (plus my discount) at Holt Renfrew almost 3 years ago. Since then, it's become the most versatile and most abused piece in my wardrobe, being worn through hell and high water, to weddings and to wing nights.

The fabric is incredible, and impressively resilient, a lightweight high-twist Super 140s wool in the deepest indigo (people often confuse it for black). With gorgeous details like it's full canvas construction, pick -stitched peak lapel and crested buttons.

This jacket taught me the value and versatility of the navy blazer. If you don't have one yet, find the right investment piece and pull the trigger on it. You won't regret it.
